NEW UNWOMAN ALBUM: BLOSSOMS!

April 24th, 2006

02:06 pm - Zoe confirms what I've been keeping quiet
http://community.livejournal.com/inourbloomers/558898.html (a message from her on the rasputina board was quoted on the Rasputina LJ community.)

Before you ask, I have not been asked to officially join Rasputina. I'm not counting on either being asked or not being asked. As far as I know Melora is recording the new album with only herself on cello. Of course I will keep everyone posted if things happen that affect me.

09:36 am - WOW.
I returned safely from a very successful weekend yesterday afternoon and did very little besides shower and sleep until this morning.

Here's a redux of my experience playing in Rasputina at C12.

* Melora and Jonathan are great people. They were super nice to me, and really appreciative that I was able to sub on such short notice. Of course I was at least equally appreciative to have that opportunity. Charlie the sound guy is really nice too, though I didn't get a chance to hang out with him as much.
* Being on stage, playing live with that group, was thrilling. A combination of the realization of such hard work of mine over the past week and a half, the electricity of playing with such solid, dynamic musicians (completely live, which means there's an element of chaos), and seeing the adoring fans in the audience, singing along.
* I made a few mistakes but it's clear that I learned the songs well enough to always keep it going. The audience didn't seem to mind when I completely destroyed the line I'm supposed to sing with "....equivalent, irrelevent" in it, in fact they cheered. My biggest weeknesses in the show were being able to sing only intermittently, and harmony at that, since I'm so used to singing all the way through; and using the distortion pedal at the right times. But both of those would be better if I'd had a bit more prep-time.
* I had some fear when I saw the audience singing along: oh shit, they know the songs better than I do, they'll know I'm a poser. But nonetheless I got a lot of compliments after the show, and was even asked to autograph Rasputina merch I had nothing to do with the creation of, which of course I didn't mind doing.
* I realized the same inhibitor that suppresses stage fright (or was it the tequila?) does prevent me from feeling some of the giddy excitement I might feel during a show. In fact I felt by far more nervous, my stomach twisted and burning, when I first sat down to rock with them in upstate NY on Friday; later in the rehearsal when Melora was soothed by the fact that I did in fact learn everything pretty well, that feeling went away.

Other notes about the weekend... )
Anyone reading this who has pictures of the band with me in it, please post links in comments here, thanks!

11:23 am - Public announcement/Update: Rasputina 4/15
I'm subbing for Zoe Keating in Rasputina this coming Saturday at Convergence New Orleans. I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to play an important part in one of my very favorite bands at a large Goth/Industrial gathering. I found out about this last Tuesday and made a mad dash to learn/memorize everything knowing I'd be too wicked nervous if I didn't.

I've learned almost all the music we'll be playing, and will continue to practice as much as possible between now and then. This is a new experience for me in many ways and I've been really happy to see how many people are proud of and confident in me.

I found a flight case, one that goes over the BAM case I already had, at a place called Kamimoto Strings in San Jose. They (Especially Nori) were very, very nice to me there and even adjusted my bridge and cleaned my fingerboard without my even asking.

The flight case is big and cushy and I can sleep in it if I need to. This will be my first time flying with cello.
