10:39 am - New music happenings I'm not sure whether the covers project I've been talking about for years will come next, because I'm actually full of new songs. Surprisingly, I'm gravitating toward writing these on cello instead of piano.
I do kinda want to record demo versions of two songs for the covers project (probably "Hurt" and "Open Your Heart") -- so I can shop them to labels. I mainly want a label for this project because I'm sooo not looking forward to handling all the licensing for 13-16 songs on my own. I hope to have the demos done in a month or so, and then maybe wait until I hear back from someone before I work too much more on the project. It'll be a guaranteed good seller but still definitely my own interpretations.

12:54 pm - Cover song legal info I get people asking me how to license cover versions all the time, and there's a lot of confusion about how it works*. I did legally get mechanical licenses for all three cover songs on Knowledge Scars**, and I paid the Edna St. Vincent Millay Society half (since I'm using her lyrics, and my own music) the standard rate for all eight songs of hers on Blossoms. I don't have cover songs publicly posted on my website or anywhere else now, though for a while, like, seven years ago, I was doing a "Cover song of the month" thing on my website. It was really cool while I was able to keep it up, and I'm considering bringing it back. A woman in France friended me on myspace and asked if I could send her a copy of my cover of Little 15 -- which I recorded when I was Little 18 and had posted many many years ago -- so happily, I emailed it to her. It's interesting the ways in which I have no idea where my music goes, through random people finding them, filesharing, etc. The "Hurt" demo especially spread like wildfire and I only recently realized the mp3 is still on my server. (One of these days I'll replace it with a more final version.) OK, OK -- there's one that's publicly posted still. And I feel bad for telling my friends not to share it, then leaving it up for strangers to find and use in their little playlist thingies.
Anyhow, this article is extremely informative: http://www.boutell.com/newfaq/creating/licensecovers.html ( MOAR )
