NEW UNWOMAN ALBUM: BLOSSOMS!

April 17th, 2006

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
09:36 am - WOW.
I returned safely from a very successful weekend yesterday afternoon and did very little besides shower and sleep until this morning.

Here's a redux of my experience playing in Rasputina at C12.

* Melora and Jonathan are great people. They were super nice to me, and really appreciative that I was able to sub on such short notice. Of course I was at least equally appreciative to have that opportunity. Charlie the sound guy is really nice too, though I didn't get a chance to hang out with him as much.
* Being on stage, playing live with that group, was thrilling. A combination of the realization of such hard work of mine over the past week and a half, the electricity of playing with such solid, dynamic musicians (completely live, which means there's an element of chaos), and seeing the adoring fans in the audience, singing along.
* I made a few mistakes but it's clear that I learned the songs well enough to always keep it going. The audience didn't seem to mind when I completely destroyed the line I'm supposed to sing with "....equivalent, irrelevent" in it, in fact they cheered. My biggest weeknesses in the show were being able to sing only intermittently, and harmony at that, since I'm so used to singing all the way through; and using the distortion pedal at the right times. But both of those would be better if I'd had a bit more prep-time.
* I had some fear when I saw the audience singing along: oh shit, they know the songs better than I do, they'll know I'm a poser. But nonetheless I got a lot of compliments after the show, and was even asked to autograph Rasputina merch I had nothing to do with the creation of, which of course I didn't mind doing.
* I realized the same inhibitor that suppresses stage fright (or was it the tequila?) does prevent me from feeling some of the giddy excitement I might feel during a show. In fact I felt by far more nervous, my stomach twisted and burning, when I first sat down to rock with them in upstate NY on Friday; later in the rehearsal when Melora was soothed by the fact that I did in fact learn everything pretty well, that feeling went away.

Other notes about the weekend:
*I got to se HMB live, which was awesome. Their new material is great. Howlin' Wolf's sound guy was a bit of an incompetent, stoned hick, though nice enough to us (and fortunately Rasputina brought our own) and apparently never got the monitor mix right for them, but they played great nonetheless, and in fact the house mix for them was terrific, though Daniel and Victoria didn't believe me when I said so.
* For the record, I adore Victoria Lloyd's voice, and she and I were really happy to meet each other in person finally. There may even be some opportunities for me to play on Claire Voyant albums in the future, which I would relish.
* Flying with my cello in the Bam case/flight-case-that-goes-over-regular case was fine, though I haven't found a place to put the straps that makes it easy to drag the thing around an airport. United didn't charge me an oversize fee when I checked it, but Continental did ($80).
* Christy of the Hazard County Girls ran the merch table for us. She's amazingly cool. Also met Jennifer, who is cool too, didn't talk to her as much though.
* I met Voltaire, and we had an amusing conversation about a certain mutual "friend" of ours. There's something Woody Allen-ish about his self-conscious neuroses, which I found endearing, at least in small doses. He gave a beautiful and glowing introduction for us.
* I got the total rockstar treatment backstage, had numerous pictures taken of me in the band, people with the band, people's friends with the band... people's moms with the band... I smiled in all of them, I hope it doesn't look too dorky.
* I really wish I'd gotten to see more of New Orleans, and more of the event; as it was I didn't even get to see the fashion show since I was showering the plane-grime off me and getting dressed, and I had to leave early the next morning.

Anyone reading this who has pictures of the band with me in it, please post links in comments here, thanks!

Great, thanks! There are more than these, however, that I'm looking to collect, judging by the amount that I saw taken of us. I especially want them for Buz who wasn't there to see it...

I'm giddily happy for you!

and, in my, eh, humble, opinion, playing completely live is absolutely the best musical experience. MUSICAL CHAOS IS TEH RULEZ!!!11

Kind of funny how a musician like you or me would talk about a situation in which we're performing live and it's "completely live" is an exception to how we usually perform!

I know, especially myself who had a classical background and did play exclusively live until 5 years ago, at which point it stopped abruptly. I suppose playing live rock was a tiny fear that I overcame, which is a really good thing.

I expect it's not easy to find a substitute, in this case. Must've been nice to have you available.

I don't get stage fright because I pretty much expect to suck, but still have fun. It's a three-edged sword.

I think you were fantastic! I loved the show~ :D I didn't take my camera cause I didn't know pictures were allowed. (I only went to Rasputina- not the whole week thing) and I was afraid they'd take the camera away 8\ But I saw SO MANY people taking pictures- I'm sure you can find more somewhere. Those official pictures really don't do it any justice. The light was so warm and red and pretty :D <3!

The IP address is 66.161.201.161. It's a Cincinatti ISP. Who hates me in Cincinatti? I don't actually know anyone in Cincinatti.

Wow, is there anything more terrifying than an anonymous lj comment? That surely carries so much more weight than being asked by Rasputina to sub in with them. How will she ever recover from this cutting blow?

I hope you were able to settle in and get a minimum of 3 kinds of silly with it. Seeing Rasputina live re-introduced me to the fact that you can be really serious about what you do, and the music, and lyrics, yet still embrace the silly.

I'm sure that whatever mistakes you thought you were making, you know the audience was behind it completely. A week and a half seems a bit thin to learn all that you needed to for that kind of thing.

Re: Congrats

(sorry, delayed response.) The Silly is great. It's good for me to be more in touch with the Silly. I find with my music my attitude when performing is too silly for my music since my music is so excessively serious, but Rasputina does a better job pulling off the not-too-serious music thing, so it works.

A week and a half was pretty tight, but it just makes me prouder about pulling it off.

b) which beautiful lady are you, right or left (in the pictures)?
c) you will want to save the "direct" version of the pictures (that should make sense when you see the way the gallery is laid out)
