02:45 pm - Tattoo I'm going to get a tattoo of the Unwoman symbol on the back of my neck. The unwoman symbol, for those of you who've never seen the way I sign CDs, is a venus (woman) symbol with a line through the round part, like this (but with no gap between the plus and the circle):
Ø +
When I was approaching 18 my mom, who is extremely liberal where it counts, told me she'd disown me if I got a tattoo. I wouldn't really have let that stop me, but I was smart enough to know that, at the time, I was not ready to make any permanent decisions for myself. I got a lip and septum piercing instead, neither of which stayed in for more than two years. Really bad placement for someone with constant sinus infections and mouth sores (that were caused by eating gluten, and haven't come back since I figured that out and went gluten-free, but the holes healed up before I knew it and I realized I liked my face better without them.)
Ten years have passed and I couldn't have know it then, but I really know who I am now. And the unwoman identity has been with me since 2001 and it should be a part of my body forever, whatever else happens.
Not sure when I'll get it and the exact details of how it will look, but I'll probably go to Tattoo City.

When I was 15 I thought you had the coolest mom ever! I'm with you on the no tattoos on a whim thing. I continue to be amazed by the things people permantly ink into their skin, but seeing as how it is a symbol having meaning for you and a long term part of your identity, it seems practical enough.

I did (and still do) have the coolest mom ever! At the time I was surprised by the tattoo thing, but I later realized, she would not have disowned me no matter what, she just felt *really strongly* that I shouldn't get a tattoo. She was totally right, but in fact my feeling ready now actually symbolizes a new stage in my adulthood.
A previous realization of adulthood happened when I decided I could eat (gluten-free) chocolate biscotti for breakfast every day and no one could tell me not to. :)
I still don't fully feel grown-up, however. That's probably a good thing.

NUH UH MY MOM IS COOLEST! I named my music project Unwoman while rereading Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. It represents not wanting to fall into any stereotypical female role. (and also I love that book.)

YOU JUST DON'T KNOW IT!
I feel I know amazingly few women who fall into any stereotypical female role. On the other hand.. maybe I just fail to identify that role. :)

There are large periods of time in my life when I have nothing to do with such women. Then I perversely listen to Christian radio or travel outside San Francisco and, women who follow a 1950's submissive role certainly do still exist.
I kind of meant it as, stereotypical role as a female performer -- meaning being mainstream-attractive and having a gentle, pleasant demeanor. I don't go for that (well, definitely didn't on my first album cover), but then neither do I go for anything shocking-for-shocking's-sake.

Yeah. I just did some "research" ;) and actually like your album covers on "Knowledge Scars" and "Blossoms" a lot. "Wildness Artifice" not so much. :-P They're far from "shocking" though. Blossoms reminds me of the "The Dresden Dolls" album cover. Actually I'd say you're very attractive on those covers. Dunno if that's mainstream or just me, but I wouldn't worry about what's mainstream or not, as long as it's cool. On the other hand.. you're "unwoman" and have to be con-mainstream. :-D
I just ordered a copy of "Blossoms" on CD Baby -- I like what I hear on myspace. Wonder how long shipping to Germany takes. :-)
Funny how I keep discovering good music through jwz's journal. Do you play both, piano and cello on the recordings?

Thank you for ordering the new album, that's wonderful! I agree with your opinion of the cover of Wildness & Artifice -- it looks too much like a classical CD cover. The album is good though, I'm still pleased with it, though it doesn't quite have the flow and consistency that I'm into now.
Other people overseas have gotten things from CD Baby pretty quickly, like a week or so, but you never know when something's going to get delayed.
Yes, JWZ has great taste in music! And yes, I do everything except mastering on the CDs.
I had been icis pretty much since 1996, so the decision to get the logo tattoo in 2003 was a matter of someone designing it and I liking for several months.
I would recommend doing your homework and "shopping around" for the right artist who you like and has the right style and skills to do it right.

I'm sure you have a major support group, but in case you have any questions, you could certainly ask me. I've worked at three different tattoo studios, and my mom has been tattooing for nearly a decade now, so I can tell you most things you might want to know.

Thanks! Spellbound's drummer works at Tattoo City and Buz had one done there, so I'm pretty loyal, plus what I want is really simple, but I appreciate the offer very much!
I will definitely be posting pics, too :)
